"Killarney strawberry tree"

Killarney strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) so-called after its fruit. It grows wild in counties Cork, Kerry and Sligo and is the only tree native to Ireland that is not a native of Britain. It has a rosy bark and likes a mild acidic soil. Exported as a curiosity from Ireland to Britain in 1586. Coming from the Mediterranean, it took the short cut from Brittany after the last Ice Age, unlike the rest of Ireland's native trees, which came via Dover and Holyhead. It is also known as the arbutus (tree).
