"crannóg"

crannóg (pl crannóga) /krano:g/ dwelling on an island, usually about 30m across, built on artificial platforms of stone, logs and brushwood, fortified with palisades and found in shallow lakes, rivers or marshes. Underwater stepping-stones facilitated access to the crannóga for those who knew their location. Built from the Later Bronze Age to the 17th century. The crannóg at Lagore, Co. Meath, was the first one in Ireland to be scientifically investigated and described (by George Petrie and William Wilde). Their ancient name is not known, and they were often referred to as inis.
